The Basement

The chain on the basement door was still latched from my side when someone downstairs started pulling it tight.

Then my mother called from the basement and asked who was standing beside me.

WHY THIS ONE WORKS

The first sentence creates a stable assumption. The second does not merely surprise; it changes what the first sentence meant.

It follows the house rule: exactly two sentences, with the turn doing more than adding a monster. It changes the reader’s interpretation of the setup.

Crawlspace

The exterminator said the scratching in the crawlspace was too heavy to be rats.

Voice Note

My sister sent a voice note asking me to stop calling her from the basement.

The Hallway

I heard my son running down the hallway and yelled that he was supposed to be asleep.

Wrong Child

The police found my missing son after six years, and the DNA test says he is unquestionably mine.

Hide and Seek

During hide-and-seek my daughter giggled from inside the wardrobe and told me I would never find her.
