Room 406

The receptionist apologized and said nobody had stayed in Room 406 for several years.

I did not tell her I had spent all night listening to someone on the other side of its wall begging me not to open my door.

WHY THIS ONE WORKS

Temporary rooms are effective horror spaces because every sound and door belongs to a history the guest does not know.

It follows the house rule: exactly two sentences, with the turn doing more than adding a monster. It changes the reader’s interpretation of the setup.

Late Checkout

At checkout the clerk asked whether the woman in my room would also be leaving today.

Smart Lock

At midnight my smart lock notified me that the front door had been opened with my fingerprint.

Imaginary Friend

My daughter stopped talking to her imaginary friend after I told her he was not real.

Hotel Key

The key card in my pocket opened Room 217 even though the clerk insisted the hotel had no second floor.

The Peephole

The hotel rules said never look through the peephole after three knocks.
